On 5 and 6 June 2025, over 60 municipal representatives, researchers, and climate resilience experts gathered in Riga for the seminar āPlanning Nature-Based Solutions for Climate Resilience ā from Local to Regional Level.ā The event offered a valuable opportunity for knowledge exchange on how nature-based solutions (NBS) can help cities and regions adapt to climate change.
Organised to foster dialogue across disciplines and sectors, the seminar addressed a shared challenge: how to protect urban areas from the growing risks of flooding, extreme weather, and heatwaves ā while also strengthening the natural systems that support our wellbeing.
IMPETUS partners contributed to the agenda, sharing key insights and examples alongside the LATESTadapt project. Participants also heard from the cities of Riga, Valmiera, and CÄsis about their efforts to develop urban green infrastructure, as well as from the Zemgale Planning Region on regional-level adaptation strategies.
A highlight of the second day was a field trip across various neighborhoods in Riga, where participants observed numerous NBS implementations in both public and private spaces. These site visits demonstrated the tangible benefits of NBS, particularly in areas not connected to the cityās stormwater drainage system. The solutions in place ā from rainwater-absorbing green spaces to innovative local cooling strategies ā confirmed that nature-based approaches are more than just environmentally friendly; they are effective, sustainable, and essential tools for building urban resilience.
The IMPETUS project remains committed to supporting the development and promotion of NBS across Europe and is proud to have contributed to this important seminar in Riga.
